Most states offer a free fishing day or free fishing weekend to encourage those that do not fish to give it a try and they will not need to buy a license to do that. The following are links to the dates that all of the New England states have for their respective free fishing day or days.



Maine


Free Fishing Days 2014

Free fishing days for 2014 will take place on May 31 and June 1. On these days residents, nonresidents and aliens (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days

Massachusetts


Free Fishing Days 2014

June 7 & 8 -- STATEWIDE FREE FISHING WEEKEND! Take a friend or family member fishing for free--you won't need a fishing license to fish any waterbody statewide for these two days! It is time well spent with family and friends. Your purchase of a fishing license directly supports fishing, stocking, education and fish habitat management programs. Rhode Island

Exception: Atlantic Salmon permit still required for Merrimack River brood stock fishery program


Vermont

Free Fishing Day 2012

The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) has designated Saturday, May 12th as a “Free Fishing Day” in Connecticut where no fishing license will be required.  This opportunity will be available to both residents and non-residents and applies to all public waters of the state
