N.H. Food Bank Seeks Meat Donations from Hunters
New Hampshire hunters can share their fall harvest with the needy through the “Hunt for the Hungry” program at the New Hampshire Food Bank. Once again this fall, the food bank is collecting donations of whole or processed game animals for distribution to more than 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and group homes statewide.

An upcoming two-day workshop in Greenland offers beginners a chance to learn about the timeless sport of fly-fishing. Lobster Trap Thief Charged
A 21-year-old Bedford man faces multiple charges related to possession of stolen lobster gear, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials reported today. Kyle Basoukas of Bedford, N.H., was arrested on November 11 following a three-month investigation by N.H. Fish and Game Law Enforcement.

This year, New Hampshire is once again offering the Apprentice Hunting License, an opportunity for sharing or participating in the hunting experience. Stinson Lake Boat Ramp in Rumney Closed for Repairs

N.H. Pheasant Season Opens October 1
New Hampshire's hunting season for pheasant gets underway on October 1 and continues through December 31. There will be 73 stocking sites in 49 towns. This fall, 12,260 adult ring-necked pheasants will be released in all ten New Hampshire counties. Pheasant hunters have a daily bag limit of 2, and a season limit of 10 birds.

New Minimim Size Limits for Commercial Harvesters of Cod, Haddock and Flounders
The NH Fish and Game Department will be implementing interim rules on July 1 to change the minimum size limits of some groundfish species and implement a minimum size limit for witch flounder for commercial harvesters. The interim rules will be in place for 180 days and are designed to complement similar federal rules that also will go into effect on July 1 for federal waters (3-200 miles from shore).

Atlantic Herring Landing Days Announced

Prescribed Burn in Concord Airport Area to Improve Wildlife Habitat
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the N.H. Department of Resources and Economic Development Division of Forests and Lands, with support from the N.H. Army National Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the City of Concord, will conduct a “prescribed burn” in areas on and near Concord Municipal Airport grounds this spring. The prescribed burn may occur as early as April 13, or as late as May 20, 2013; the date will be finalized when the weather and atmospheric conditions are seen to be safe.

These programs give youth (boys and girls) age 10-15 the chance to learn about the shooting sports, bowhunting and other outdoor skills. April 1 Deadline for Removing Bobhouses from Ice
Attention ice anglers: All bobhouses, also known as ice shanties, must be removed from the ice no later than the end of the day on April 1 according to state law. Once it's off the ice, do not leave bobhouses on public or private property without permission – that’s also a violation of state law – so if you’ve moved your bobhouse to the shoreline, take care to move the structure to your own property.

Snowmobile Accident on Rail Trail in Conway Injures Two
On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, two Center Conway men were injured in a snowmobile crash at the railroad trestle that spans the Saco River in Conway, a section of the rail line that is part of the snowmobile trail system. Conservation Officer Sgt. Brian Abrams, Conway Police Officers and Firefighters, and two ambulance squads evacuated the two injured snowmobilers.

Ice Climber Injured at Crawford Notch State Park
On Saturday, March 16, 2013, at approximately 2:30 PM, Eric Scoville, age 55, of New Boston, NH, fell while climbing the Standard Route at Frankenstein Cliffs in Crawford Notch State Park. Scoville was climbing solo and was un-roped. He was near the top of an ice bulge on the first pitch, approximately seventy feet above the ground, when he fell, with no rope or protection to arrest his fall.

ASMFC Northern ShrimpSection Modifies Landing Days for Trawl and Trap Fisheries
The Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section has extended the number of allowed landing days for the 2013 northern shrimp trawl fishery. Effective March 13, 2013, the trap and trawl fisheries will be able to land shrimp seven days a week (Monday through Sunday). Additionally, the trap and trawl fisheries will close effective 2359 hours (EST) on April 12, 2013.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Winter Flounder Management Board approved Draft Addendum III to Amendment 1 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for the Inshore Stocks of Winter Flounder for public comment. The Draft Addendum proposes an annual specification process to set commercial and recreational fisheries measures for the Gulf of Maine (GOM) and Southern New England/Mid-Atlantic (SNE/MA) fisheries, including in-season accountability measures for commercial fisheries.

Ice Conditions Unsafe on Parts of Lake Winnipesaukee and other Large Lakes
New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials warn that this winter's uneven temperatures and high winds have affected ice formation, particularly on the state's larger lakes. Fish and Game is urging those heading out onto the ice to exercise caution as they do so. A large number of anglers are expected to head out onto the state's lakes and ponds this weekend to participate in the Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby (February 9-10).

Injured Hiker Carried Off Mt. Major
On Sunday, January 6, 2013, at about 2:30 p.m. a 21-year-old woman, Shannon Koechel of Bedford, NH, slipped and fell while hiking with a friend on the Boulder Loop Trail on Mt. Major in Alton, injuring her leg. Knowing it would be getting dark in a few hours, the hikers called 911.

No Victim Found in Rindge Submerged Snowmobile Incident; Ice Safety Warning
Yesterday evening (Thursday, January 3, 2013) at about 4:00 p.m., two New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers on routine patrol discovered a partially submerged snowmobile in Emerson Pond in Rindge, N.H. The Conservation Officers contacted the Rindge Fire Department, which in turn requested Winchendon, Massachusetts, Fire Department’s hovercraft in an effort to look for potential victims.

NH Wild Turkey Winter Flock Survey Starts in January; Summer Brood Report Out
If you see a flock of wild turkeys in New Hampshire this winter, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department wants you to report it via the online NH Wild Turkey Winter Flock Survey. Report any turkey flocks seen from January 1 through March 31, 2013, by filling out a simple electronic survey form posted on the Fish and Game website at wildnh.com/turkeysurvey. You can also find the survey anytime during the survey period by going to the Fish and Game website wildnh.com and clicking on "Turkey Survey." Please do not report multiple sightings of the same flock.

Manchester Man Charged in Illegal Trapping Case

Time to Sign Up for Snowmobile Safety Classes
Winter is almost here, and snowmobile education classes are underway across the state. To operate a snowmobile in New Hampshire, any person age 12 or older must have either a valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License or have successfully completed an approved Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle (OHRV) Safety Education class taught by volunteer instructors trained by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Wildlife Action Grants Available
Teachers and community members interested in involving youth to make a difference for wildlife through habitat projects on schoolyards, public areas or community lands can apply to the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program for start-up funds. This New Hampshire Fish and Game Department program provides mini-grants of $300-$600. Habitat projects create spaces for outdoor learning, and can range from a butterfly garden to shrubs for birds to a pond for amphibians – your imagination is the limit.

N.H. Fish and Game Acquires Boat Access Site on Lake Winnipesaukee
On November 21, 2012, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department purchased a private marina known as Downing’s Landing at the southern tip of Alton Bay. That means Fish and Game, after many years, has finally acquired a boat access facility on Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest lake.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will hold public hearings regarding proposed marine aquaculture applications for licensing of three shellfish bottom-culture operations on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The hearings will be held at Fish and Game’s Region 3 Office, 225 Main Street, Durham, N.H. 03824. The body of a hunter was recovered in Swanzey, N.H, early Tuesday morning, November 20, 2012. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department had been notified Monday night of an overdue hunter in the area of Talbot Hill Road.

Derry Man Struck in Hunting-Related Shooting
A 27-year-old Derry man, Russell Raymond, narrowly escaped serious injury on Friday afternoon (November 16th) after being shot by another hunter. The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. while Raymond was deer hunting in a wooded area north of Tallant Road in Pelham.

Monroe Man Injured in OHRV Rollover
On November 14, 2012, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Irving Lang, age 72, of Coppermine Road in Monroe was involved in an OHRV accident while heading out into the woods to go hunting. Lang was traveling through the woods on a steep trail heading uphill when he lost control of the ATV and it rolled over on top of him

Atlantic Herring Closure in Effect for Area 1A
Commercial fishermen are prohibited from landing Atlantic herring taken from Management Area 1A, because herring harvesters reached the projected 95% of allowable harvest quota for the period. The closure went into effect at noon on Monday, November 5, 2012, and will remain in effect through midnight on May 31, 2013.

Tickets for the 30/30 gun raffle benefiting Conservation Law Enforcement activities of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department are now available only at the Barn Store of New England on Route 4 in Salisbury. 62% of Hunters Successful in 2012 New Hampshire Moose Hunt
New Hampshire’s 2012 moose season wrapped up on Sunday, October 28, 2012. While hunters have until close of business today to register their moose at N.H. Fish and Game headquarters or regional offices, preliminary figures show that 174 hunters succeeded in taking their moose during the 9-day season. With a total of 281 permits issued, this represents a statewide success rate of 62%. That's down from last year, when 71% of hunters got their moose. The breakdown for the harvest this year was 61% bulls and 39% cows. Final season results will be available upon completion of registration data entry and analysis.

Apprentice Hunting License: New Way to "Take a friend – Make a hunter"
New Hampshire has a new opportunity this year for sharing or participating in the hunting experience. The Apprentice Hunting License allows people to hunt, under the guidance of an experienced hunter age 18 or older, without first taking a Hunter Education course. Half of NH Moose Hunters Successful at Season Midpoint
As of Wednesday, October 24, 2012, a total of 141 moose had been taken in the 2012 New Hampshire moose hunt (84 bulls and 57 cows). That means that half (50%) of the 281 hunters holding moose permits had succeeded by the midway point in the state’s moose hunt, which is in line with a typical year. (Last year, 55% of hunters had gotten their moose by this point in the season.) The nine-day season runs through Sunday, October 28, 2012.

Firearms Deer Season Is November 14, 2012
Opening day for New Hampshire’s regular firearms deer season is November 14, 2012, a date anticipated with great enthusiasm by the state’s estimated 60,000 deer hunters. The season runs through December 9 in most of the state, except in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) A in northern New Hampshire, where it closes December 2. Changes in season length remain in place in Wildlife Management Unit A as part of an effort to improve the buck age-structure of the northern deer herd. The state’s popular muzzleloader deer season gets underway on November 3 statewide and runs through November 13.

N.H. Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Brings 25% Success
One-fourth of New Hampshire’s moose hunters were successful during the first two days of the nine-day season, achieving a 25% success rate on the opening weekend of the hunt. On Saturday and Sunday (October 20 and 21), a total of 69 moose were taken by hunters statewide – 44 bulls and 25 cows. This year's results were much like last year's 27% success rate for the 2011 opening weekend.

Vermont Girl Injured in New Hampshire ATV Crash
On October 13, 2012, at approximately 2:53 p.m., Conservation Officers from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department responded to the Hinsdale Campground at Thicket Hill in Hinsdale for a two-vehicle OHRV(off highway recreational vehicle) accident. The accident occurred in the area of the power lines on private property outside of the campground.

N.H. Moose Hunt Is October 20-28, 2012
For nine exciting days, from October 20 to 28, 2012, lucky moose permit holders and their hunting partners will have the experience of a lifetime taking part in New Hampshire’s annual moose hunt. A total of 275 permit holders were drawn in this year’s lottery, randomly selected by computer from a pool of more than 13,400 applicants.

Missing Rochester Man Is Found Safe in Strafford
The search for a missing Rochester man in Strafford concluded successfully today when the man was found safe, camping about a half-mile from his car, which was parked near the intersection of Johnsonboro Road and Route 202-A in Strafford. The man, identified as Francis Drown, age 54, of Rochester, had been reported missing by his family. Drown had not had contact with family members since 4 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2012.

Hampton Woman Injured in Sandown ATV Accident
A 30-year-old woman was injured in an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) rollover and collision in Sandown Sunday afternoon (October 7, 2012). The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Katie Wilson of Hampton, N.H., was operating an ATV on the Rockingham rail trail in Sandown when she sharply applied the brakes while approaching a wooden bridge. Wilson's machine rolled over on top of her, causing serious injuries.

Wildlife Habitat Improvements Slated for Kearsarge Wildlife Management Area
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands (NHDFL) report that a timber sale aimed at improving wildlife habitat is slated for the Kearsarge Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The operation, which could start as early as this month, will occur on 157 acres of the 1,000-acre WMA and will be supervised by NHDFL foresters.

N.H. Pheasant Season Opens October 1
New Hampshire's hunting season for pheasant gets underway on October 1 and continues through December 31. There will be approximately 75 stocking sites in 50 towns. A total of 13,000 adult ring-necked pheasants will be released in all 10 counties.

N.H. Youth Waterfowl Hunt Weekend: September 29-30, 2012
New Hampshire's 2012 Youth Waterfowl Hunting Weekend will be held statewide on Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30, 2012. To participate, youth must be age 15 or younger and must be accompanied by a properly licensed adult age 18 or older. The adult may not hunt. The youth does not need a hunting license or duck stamp.

NH Hunters: Do Not Transport NY-killed Deer through Massachusetts or Vermont
New Hampshire hunters hunting in New York this fall should be aware that it is illegal to transport the carcasses through Vermont or Massachusetts. While New York has been removed from New Hampshire’s list of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)-positive jurisdictions, Massachusetts and Vermont have not done so.

Milford Hatchery Not a Deer/Turkey Check Station this Fall
Hunters in south/central New Hampshire should note that there will not be a deer and turkey registration station at the Milford Fish Hatchery this year. Successful deer and turkey hunters are required to register their kill within 24 hours at an authorized registration or "check" station, where information on the kill is collected.

Canterbury Woman Seriously Injured in ATV Accident
A 51-year-old woman was seriously injured in an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) rollover in Northfield Monday night (September 3, 2012). The incident occurred about 6:40 p.m. Liane Hoyt of Canterbury was operating an ATV on a snowmobile trail in Northfield when the machine rolled over on top of her, causing serious injuries. She was riding with a group, but none of the other riders saw the accident happen. When her companions reached her and got the machine off her, she was unconscious. They called 911 for assistance. Hoyt had not been wearing a helmet.

Newfound Lake Boat Ramp to Be Closed for Repairs September 17, 2012
The Wellington State Park boat access facility on Newfound Lake in Bristol, N.H., will be closed for repairs from September 17 through the remainder of the year, opening back up in the spring. During this time, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will replace the concrete boat launch ramps with ramps of a newer, more innovative design. In addition, the old dock will be replaced with an accessible floating dock. Boaters who rely on this launch for removing boats before ice-in will need to get their boats out before September 17, 2012.

2012-2013 N.H. Waterfowl Hunting Seasons Set
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has set final season dates and bag limits for the 2012-2013 waterfowl hunting season. After considering comments from sportsmen at the August public meeting, New Hampshire’s proposed waterfowl season is much like last year’s, with a 60-day duck season with a 6-bird daily limit, and a 60-day Canada goose season with a 2-bird daily limit.

Body of Connecticut River Kayaker Recovered
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Dive Team recovered the body of Thomas Howell, 57, of Hinsdale, today in the Connecticut River in Hinsdale, NH. A search was launched yesterday (Thursday, June 5, 2012) for Howell, who was last seen swimming alongside his kayak at approximately 12:30 p.m. near the Prospect Street boat ramp in Hinsdale. Howell’s body was recovered in fifteen feet of water, approximately 40 yards from where he was last seen by witnesses. Howell did not have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). It is believed that alcohol was a contributing factor

Got Bats? New Rule Protects Vulnerable Bats with Restriction on Exclusion
Are you planning to remove bats from your property? Be aware that a new rule designed to protect bats prohibits the exclusion of bats from unoccupied structures by licensed Wildlife Control Operators from May 15 through August 15, unless the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services has documented a rabid bat on the property. Brake for Moose: It Could Save Your Life
Remember to brake for moose when traveling New Hampshire roadways. There were 146 reported moose/vehicle collisions in New Hampshire in 2011; in the last five years the state has averaged 184 per year. June is a high-risk month for encountering moose on the roads, because moose are moving from winter to spring habitats and coming out to the roads to eat salt. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is working to make people more aware of the danger of moose/vehicle collisions.

Trout Take Flight – to New Hampshire's Remote Ponds
Trout literally took flight this month, as the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department delivered fingerling fish to some of the state's most remote waters. Every year in June, a helicopter hired by Fish and Game stocks remote ponds from Sunapee to Pittsburg. Be aware of endangered birds on the beaches this weekend and beyond as the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department reports there are six pairs of plovers incubating eggs or watching over chicks on sandy shores of Hampton and Seabrook. Young Girl Safe after Being Swept to Top of Swift River Waterfall
A 12-year-old girl from Milford visiting the Swift River in Albany, N.H., on Monday, June 18, 2012, slipped off a rock about 5:30 p.m. and was swept down the river about 150 feet to the top of Lower Falls. There, she was able to grab onto a rock and hold on against the strong current long enough for bystander James Barnhouse of Northeast Dover, Ohio, to make his way to her position in the river. He was able to stabilize her and together they reached the other side of the river. At the Lower Falls, the Swift River falls about 15 feet, rushing over rocky, craggy surfaces.

Moose Lottery Drawing Takes Place Friday, June 15, 2012

Be aware of endangered birds on the beaches this holiday weekend and beyond as the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department reports there are six pairs of piping plovers nesting along the sandy shores of Hampton and Seabrook. The deadline for entering the New Hampshire moose hunt lottery is Friday, May 25. Habitat Work Underway to Conserve Rare New England Cottontails
For the New England cottontail, mild winter conditions were a stroke of luck – a lack of snow made it easier for them to hide and find food. Statewide Survey of New Hampshire Dragonflies Completed
Between 2007 and 2011, a small army of net-wielding naturalists was unobtrusively scouring the wetlands of New Hampshire for dragons – or more specifically dragonflies and damselflies. And they found them – lots of them. Over those five years, roughly 100 volunteers collected more than 18,000 records of dragonflies and damselflies, representing 157 of the 162 species known to occur in the state.

Prescribed Burn in Concord Airport Area to Improve Wildlife Habitat
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the N.H. Department of Resources and Economic Development Division of Forests and Lands, with support from the N.H. Army National Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the City of Concord, will conduct a “prescribed burn” in areas on and near Concord Municipal Airport grounds this spring. The prescribed burn may occur as early as April 14, or as late as May 20; the date will be finalized when the weather and atmospheric conditions are seen to be safe.

Man Seriously Injured in Warren ATV Crash
A young man was seriously injured in a morning All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) crash in Warren on Sunday, April 1, 2012. Sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., Travis Wescott, age 23, reportedly of Campton, N.H., was riding as the passenger in a John Deere Gator (a two-person ATV) operated by 21-year-old Brian Huckins Jr. of Warren on the grounds of the Route 118 Campground in Warren.

Anglers are expected to be out in force on April 1 for the start of the open-water fishing season on landlocked salmon/lake trout-managed lakes in New Hampshire. A Shift in Strategy for Merrimack River Atlantic Salmon Restoration
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department won't need as much volunteer help this year stocking millions of inch-long salmon fry (young salmon) into the Merrimack River basin because of an exciting new development. About the same number of fry will be stocked, but fewer rivers are being targeted because Fish and Game does not want to stock on top of fry that may have hatched in the wild.

Expect Bears to Emerge From Dens Earlier This Spring
What a winter it has been -- or lack thereof! Mother Nature has not fooled the bears either, and they are ready to emerge from dens in search of spring foods. Bears den primarily to avoid being active during a period of time when food is limited. Weather conditions do play a role in the timing of den entry and emergence, but the influence of weather on denning behavior is less significant than food availability.

Last Call for Junior Duck Stamp Contest – $500 Prize
Kids who want to enter New Hampshire's 2012 Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest should start putting the finishing touches on their masterpieces. Entries must be postmarked by March 15. N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers and staff from the Strafford and Farmington Police and Fire Departments last night participated in a search for four hikers on Blue Job Mountain. 2011 N.H. Trophy Fish Winners Announced
The winners of New Hampshire's 2011 Trophy Fish Program have been announced by Don Miller, Fisheries Biologist and Trophy Fish Program Coordinator for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. The program gives fishing enthusiasts of all ages an opportunity to receive recognition, while providing biologists with important information on the state's fisheries over time. The Trophy Fish Program was created in the 1970s, although the state's record fish information dates back to 1911. "Over the years, through the Trophy Fish Program, we have received valuable data on fish populations not normally reported to us," Don Miller noted. "And almost every year, a new state record is reported, which says a lot about New Hampshire's fisheries."

Man's Body Recovered in Monadnock State Park
The body of a 21-year-old Alexandria, N.H., man was recovered today, Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at Monadnock State Park after a coordinated search during which the park was closed because evidence suggested that the missing man may have been armed and despondent. A preliminary investigation indicates the hiker appeared to have taken his own life with a firearm. The deceased man was found on the White Cross Trail near the summit and was carried out by N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers and Jaffrey Police, assisted by N.H. State Park staff.

Northern Shrimp Fishery to Close February 17, 2012
At a meeting today, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section took action to close the 2012 northern shrimp season. In response to the Section's decision to close the fishery, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Executive Director Glenn Normandeau announced that the northern shrimp season in New Hampshire waters will be closed as of Friday, February 17, 2012, at 11:59 p.m., in accordance with Fis 607.01.

Single Vehicle Accident Leaves Snowmobiler with a Leg Injury
On the afternoon of January 26, 2012, Roger Roy, 50, of Litchfield, NH, sustained a leg injury after his snowmobile tipped over on him. Roy described to NH Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers how he had hit a small bump in the trail, which caused his snowmobile to roll on its side, trapping his leg between the machine and the ground. The accident occurred on a trail just west of the Seven Islands Bridge, which is located next to Route 16 in the town of Errol. At the time of the accident, Roy was riding in a group with eight other friends. A member of the riding group was able to go to the Seven Islands Bridge, where he made a cell phone call to 911.

ASMFC Northern Shrimp Section Revises 2012 TAC and Sets Next Meeting for Feb. 2, 2012
To help address northern shrimp harvester and processor concerns about their ability to maintain markets that have been established over the past few seasons, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Northern Shrimp Section has revised the total allowable catch (TAC) for the 2012 northern shrimp fishery to 2,211 metric tons, an increase of 211 metric tons from the original 2012 TAC.

Laconia Man Killed in Belmont Snowmobile Crash
A 25-year-old Laconia man, Robert Horn, died when his snowmobile crashed in Belmont around 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012. Horn had been riding the snow machine at a friend's house, testing it out after making some repairs, when he suddenly angled across a field and a road and crashed into some trees. Witnesses said it looked to them like the machine's throttle may have become stuck. Horn was not wearing a helmet and appeared to have been killed instantly.

New for 2012: Change in Allowable Turkey Shot Size
A new rule effective January 1, 2012, changes the allowable shot size for taking wild turkey from #2, #4, #5 and #6 to a shot size of #2 or smaller. This change was put in place to allow hunters to use a wider range of shot sizes, including the popular #7 shot utilized in modern heavier-than-lead blended turkey loads.

Fish and Game: N.H. Ice Conditions Unsafe
The N.H. Fish and Game Department and local officials are getting reports of unsafe ice around the state. “Recent warm weather, rain and wind have made ice conditions unsafe in most parts of the state, although some small lakes and ponds are frozen over,” said Col. Martin Garabedian, Chief of N.H. Fish and Game’s Law Enforcement Division. “Be patient and wait for solid ice. Before you go out on the ice, check the thickness for yourself.”

Special Fundraising Effort Underway to Document Canada Lynx in N.H.

“Citizen Conservationists” Asked to Report Wild Turkey Flock Sightings
If you see a flock of wild turkeys in New Hampshire this winter, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department would like to hear about it. For the fourth consecutive year, citizens are being asked to report sightings of turkey flocks seen from January 1 through March 31, 2012, by filling out a simple electronic survey form posted on the Fish and Game website at www.wildnh.com/turkeysurvey.

Arrests Made in Ossipee and Tamworth for Illegal Take of Moose and Deer
The major hunting seasons may be over, but New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers are still busy responding to reports of wildlife violations. 2011 New Hampshire Deer and Bear Hunting Season Results
The preliminary numbers for New Hampshire's recent deer and bear hunting seasons are in. The estimated statewide deer kill for New Hampshire’s 2011 season was 11,167 deer, up 14% from 2010 (9,759 deer) and the highest harvest since 2007. It appears that the last weeks of the season were quite successful, because as late as Thanksgiving weekend, the estimated take was running just 4% above 2010 levels at that point in the season.

Free Winter Indoor Archery League Offered in Holderness N.H.
Now that archery season has come to an end, those interested in keeping their archery skills in tune over the winter can sign up to take part in a free four-week evening archery league starting in February 2012 at the N.H. Fish and Game Department's Owl Brook Hunter Education Center, located at 387 Perch Pond Road in Holderness, N.H. An intermediate archery skill level is recommended.

Missing Durham Hiker Is Rescued
An 82-year-old Newmarket man, Bruce Charity, who was missing since late yesterday (Monday, December 12, 2011), was reached by rescuers about 10:30 a.m. today after a N.H. State Police helicopter spotted him from the air. Alive, but suffering from hypothermia, Charity is being carried out of the remote swampy area in Durham, N.H., and an ambulance is standing by to transport him to Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover.

Canada Lynx Documented in Northern New Hampshire
Fish and Game biologists have confirmed the presence of four Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) in northern New Hampshire. The fact that the lynx appeared to be kittens is evidence that the wild cats are breeding in N.H., an expansion of the population across the border in Maine

Canine Search and Rescue Program Gets $2,500 Grant from Fuller Foundation
The Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire announces a $2,500 grant from the Fuller Foundation in support of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Canine Search and Rescue Program. Public Hearing on Marine Rules, Lamprey River Set for January 3, 2012

Shortened Season Set for 2012 Northern Shrimp Fishery
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Northern Shrimp Section has set a shortened season for the 2011-2012 northern shrimp fishery because of a smaller population of northern shrimp. A total allowable catch (TAC) of 2,000 metric tons was approved, with the season closing when landings are projected to reach 95 percent of the TAC (1,900 metric tons).

New Fishing Limits Proposed to Promote Higher Abundance of Menhaden on Eastern Seaboard
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Atlantic Menhaden Management Board has approved Addendum V to Amendment 1 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Menhaden. The Addendum establishes a new interim fishing mortality threshold of 15% and target of 30% (based on maximum spawning potential, or MSP), with the goal of increasing abundance, spawning stock biomass and menhaden availability as a forage species.

N.H. Hunting Season Update
New Hampshire’s regular firearms deer hunting is going well, as hunters look forward to time afield during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Through November 13, 2011, hunters had taken an estimated 6,653 deer in New Hampshire, very similar to the 6,729 registered at this point in the 2010 season.

Advisory: Remove Boats from Boundary Pond by December 4, 2011
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development today issued an advisory for boat owners to remove their boats and other property from areas adjacent to the shore, dam and trail at Boundary Pond in Pittsburg, N.H., prior to the planned reconstruction of the dam in June 2012.

Wildlife Action Grants Available
Teachers and community members interested in involving youth to make a difference for wildlife through habitat projects on schoolyards, public areas or community lands can apply to the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program for start-up funds. This New Hampshire Fish and Game Department program provides mini-grants of $300-$600. Habitat projects create spaces for outdoor learning, and can range from a butterfly garden to shrubs for birds to a pond for amphibians – your imagination is the limit.

They're big, hairy, hungry and hopefully not coming to a neighborhood near you. Free-ranging feral swine have become one of the more serious wildlife problems in the United States, and New Hampshire has a confirmed, though small, population. 31-year-old Hunter Fatally Shot in Hunting-related Incident in Lisbon, N.H.
A 31-year-old man who was hunting with his father and brother on the opening day of New Hampshire's firearms deer hunting season was fatally shot today at approximately 8 a.m. by another hunter in the vicinity. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred off of Mt. Eustis Road in Lisbon, N.H. The alleged shooter was unrelated to the victim's hunting party and is being interviewed by authorities at this time

Three Lost Hikers Found in Gilmanton
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (November 6, 2011) the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was notified about three lost hikers in the Belknap Mountain Range. According to Conservation Officer Lieutenant James Juneau, the lost hikers included 31 year-old scout leader William Sherwin of Brookline, Mass., and two 14-year-old scouts who were hiking as part of a Boy Scout Troop from Brookline, MA

Wildlife Heritage Foundation of NH Funds Conservation Easement Stewardship Grant

Moose Hunt Update: 52% of N.H. Moose Hunters Successful So Far
As of Wednesday, October 19, 2011, a total of 212 moose had been taken in the 2011 New Hampshire moose hunt (147 bulls and 65 cows). German Student Located During Overnight Search on Mt. Moosilauke
N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers searched into the early hours this morning, October 17, 2011, to locate a Dartmouth College student hiking Mt. Moosilauke in Benton, N.H.. Vermont State Police received a 911 call from Alexander Klemd, age 25, after dark on Sunday night. Vermont authorities contacted Fish and Game after determining that the caller was likely lost in New Hampshire.

N.H. Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Brings 27% Success
More than a quarter of New Hampshire’s moose hunters were successful during the first two days of the season, achieving a 27% success rate on the opening weekend of the hunt. On Saturday and Sunday (October 15 and 16), a total of 111 moose were taken by moose hunters statewide – 75 bulls and 36 cows. The success rate was down from 37% during opening weekend in 2010

Body of Swift River Drowning Victim Recovered
The body of a 31-year-old New Hampshire man was recovered today (Monday, October 3), from the Swift River in Conway, N.H. The drowning victim's name will not be released until late Tuesday, October 4, pending notification of immediate family members

N.H. Pheasant Season Opens October 1
New Hampshire's hunting season for pheasant gets underway on October 1 and continues through December 31. This year, N.H. Fish and Game will release 13,500 adult ring-necked pheasants during the three-month season, an average of 160 birds per site. There will be approximately 75 stocking sites in 50 towns. Most sites will be stocked on either a Thursday or Friday in October, with the exception of moose season (October 15-23), when no stocking will occur

Hiker loses trail and spends the night near Mt. Isolation
A Kittery, Maine woman became disoriented off of the Isolation Trail in Sargent’s Purchase, N.H., while hiking alone on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Susan Wiswell, age 56, called 911 at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday, after she apparently followed signs to a campsite off the Isolation Trail and could not find her way out. Conservation Officer Alex Lopashanski was able to establish cell phone communication with Wiswell and organize a group of Conservation Officers to do a hasty search of the area that she described

Two Injured in Andover Trail Bike Crash
Two Andover residents were injured Thursday evening after their trail bike crashed on the Rail Trail between Andover and Franklin, N.H. Jordan Ingram, age 24, and his passenger Dawn Dragon, age 42, both of Andover, were riding a dirt bike on the trail in Andover when they ran into an iron gate on the railroad bed about 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2011. All-Terrain Vehicles and trail bikes are prohibited on that section of the trail
